Fight To Save 'Un-Islamic' Dogs Of Iran ? Pets. Safety. Education.
For years now the brave Iranian dissidents have been fighting?Ayatollahs? Islamic oppression.
Now there is one more way the regime is?suppressing?freedom of expression in Iran: It?s banning pet dogs!
?As part of police operations in Tehran, officers also issue warnings to dog owners walking their pets outside. In Sharia-ruled Iran, dogs are considered ?impure.? Dozens of dogs in Tehran were round up last month and placed in quarantine.?
First they came for the pet dogs?
I hope all the good dog owners out there are as outraged as I am.
I am actually thinking of starting a Facebook ?cause? page to fight for the release of the?innocent?dogs from ?quarantine?.
Now that I am thinking, what exactly are they in ?quarantine? from? Isn?t ?quarantine? is where they put all the dissidents?

MUNICH (AP) ? You can't keep Didier Drogba down.
The charismatic striker was at the heart of Chelsea's unlikely comeback victory in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich on Saturday night, scoring the tying goal in the 88th minute and the winner on the final penalty kick of the 4-3 shootout.
With two minutes to go and Chelsea down 1-0 to the German team in its home stadium, Drogba soared high from a corner to head home the equalizer and force 30 minutes of extra time, which ended 1-1.
When it was still level after four penalty kicks each, the 34-year-old from Ivory Coast who makes a habit of scoring crucial goals did so again, sliding home the winner and giving Chelsea its first Champions League title.
Chelsea's remarkable Champions League season has played out with the intensity of an opera since losing 3-1 to Napoli in a last 16, first-leg match in February.
The club's Russian owner Roman Abramovich ? whose craving for a Champions League title since 2003 is routinely described as a holy grail ? soon responded by firing coach Andre Villas-Boas and promoting assistant Roberto di Matteo, albeit with just an interim tag.
Di Matteo responded by masterminding a stirring comeback against Napoli, defeat of Benfica and the epic rearguard action to eliminate Barcelona in the semifinals.
"The way we turned things around against Napoli, Barcelona, I think we deserve this trophy," Drogba said. "The last kick of the season and what a way to do it now."
Abramovich now has the fascinating decision of whether to reward Di Matteo by entrusting his billion-dollar investment to the 41-year-old Italian on a permanent basis.
"Football, like life, is unpredictable and crazy," Di Matteo said. "Nobody could have predicted the last three months. To finish like this is incredible. Whatever the future holds for me, I'd be happy."
Abramovich might consider how the interim coach helped protect the club's business plan. Victory Saturday sealed Chelsea's last remaining route, as title holder, into next season's competition and retaining the elite status and finances that follow.
The owner, who clapped and sang along as one of the fans' anthems, "The Liquidator," pounded the Allianz Arena sound system close to midnight, must also decide what contract to offer Drogba after his current deal expires next month.
The final was billed as possibly Drogba's last match for the club after eight years of exceptional service in west London.
"We can't take decisions on moments like this, on emotions," he said.
As against Barcelona, on Saturday Drogba led the attack alone as Chelsea was starved of possession, drew fouls where he could and came alive at the merest hint of a chance to score.
For good measure, he conceded the extra-time penalty which his former Chelsea teammate Arjen Robben then struck too close to Petr Cech, helping the outstanding Czech goalkeeper earn best supporting honors.
"When we have this guy in goal you have to believe," Drogba said.
Cech, who was exceptional in Barcelona, saved Robben's powerful 21st-minute shot, deflecting the ball on to his right post and handled perfectly when any Bayern effort breached the wall of defensive bodies in front of him that has been a trademark of Chelsea's campaign.
"They played the way they can at the moment. They fought, they played well defensively. They deserved it," Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said.
When Bayern led 3-2 in the shootout, after Juan Mata's opening kick was saved by German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Cech dived to his left to palm away substitute Ivica Olic's attempt.
After Ashley Cole, who also had an excellent match, leveled the shootout, Bayern's star player, Bastian Schweinsteiger stepped up.
Schweinsteiger had scored the winning goal in the semifinals shootout against Real Madrid ? extending the club's run of never losing on penalties in European competition ? but pushed his shot on to the left post, then covered his face with his shirt.
Drogba stepped up, placed his kick in the bottom right corner as Neuer dived left, and wheeled away to hug Cech and await the adulation of their onrushing teammates.
He succeeded where his captain John Terry, who was suspended for Saturday's finale, failed in missing the fifth penalty in a shootout four years ago that allowed Manchester United to win an all-English final.
That defeat in Moscow fuelled the legend of Abramovich's craving to win, and his players' desire for redemption in probably their last shot at the trophy.
Chelsea's quest looked hopeless for much of the game, and certainly after Thomas Mueller broke dogged resistance with a header past Cech in the 83rd minute.
Mueller's goal sparked delirious celebrations among the Bayern players and fans who believed they were destined to win their home final.
They underestimated Chelsea's admirable resolve, and five minutes later Drogba soared to score with a header from Mata's corner.
Yet Drogba's taste for the dramatic flared up in the third minute of extra time, as he clipped Franck Ribery's heels in the penalty area, ending the Frenchman's night through injury.
Referee Pedro Proenca's decision to point to the spot seemed to stun the Bayern fans, and their anxiety was well founded.
Robben fired low to Cech's left, and the Czech 'keeper blocked with his arm and body, then reached across to collect the loose ball.
Bayern came agonizingly close in the 108th, when substitute Olic slipped the ball across the goalmouth but teammate Daniel van Buyten failed to anticipate the simple tap-in.
But Chelsea would not be denied, as Drogba recalled the Moscow heartbreak, and four other semifinal defeats.
"Always so close and so far, and today the cup is going to Stamford Bridge, and this is the best ever," Drogba said.

Careers in Business Academia: How to get research and academic ...
Written by Sameer Kamat
Academic jobs in business pay well, in fact, much better than ?regular? academic jobs in other (non-business) fields. But it?s a tough and long road to get there.
IMD Switzerland MBA grad Hari Raghavachari wraps up the 2-part series on academic careers by talking about how you get get the skills and qualifications needed for academic jobs.

Careers in Academia & Research
Part 2: Skills & education to enable this career
The qualification required to pursue a career in Academic Research is the Ph.D (the DBA, or Doctor of Business Administration is a more recent variant). More & more schools are inviting senior executives without Ph.Ds to teach in their courses, as executives-in-residence ? but this practice hasn?t achieved wide-ranging credibility just yet.
Achieving a Ph.D takes typically 4-6 years with about 80% of entrants taking about 5 years to graduate. The degree is conferred on people who complete a comprehensive body of work under the guidance of a senior professor, including but not restricted to:
-??? Passing a set of research-field courses at doctoral levels (most demanding)
-??? A comprehensive field expertise exam at the end of the 2nd/3rd years
-??? Bodies of original, published, verifiable work in credible professional journals/publications
-??? Teaching experience on courses chaired by the professor/guide
-??? A full-on thesis of original research; defended orally to faculty and peers.
Needless to say, the top schools for Ph.D entrants who will have the attributes and the attitude to endure these 4-6 years and come out successful. Appropriate therefore, to analyze what attributes make up the right profile, and a great application to a Ph.D Program abroad:
-??? High GMAT/GRE scores. GMAT are 750+, while GRE scores in the quant section hit 800 (with 700+ in the verbal section). Quantitative ability is not negotiable! Verbal ability is increasingly expected with years of professional (not necessary research) experience you bring to the table. Where the levels of quant research are extremely strong ? GRE subject tests (mathematics, economics) or CFA qualifications would also communicate your quant proficiency.
-??? Most Ph.D applicants come with 4-10 years of experience in research heavy fields or industries (think tanks, consulting, equity research / asset management, pure sciences, engineering). Their expertise is centered around product development / engineering / R&D / process design & engineering.
-??? You have a clear idea of your broad area of intended research. This will hopefully match or fit within the key broad areas of research conducted by the academic department in that b-school, but unique enough for the academic department to consider. Example ? if you propose around ?customer acquisition through social media marketing?, and someone in the Marketing department of XYZ Top b-school is doing exactly that, it is unlikely to derive interest. IF however your proposal could be tweaked it to something like ?predicting product life-cycles when marketed through social media?, or something similarly intellectual; that ?might? drive interest. In short ? be flexible.
You will need to conduct your own research into the academic departments of the schools you could potentially apply to. There?s only one way to find this potential match, and that is by researching and (where possible) visiting schools, contacting faculty who appear to be conducting or sponsoring research in the areas you seem interested in. The process to have your interests matched with the area(s) of an academic department?s research is long & iterative. It will take you a year or longer to come a set of schools that you want to definitively apply to. That will take diligence, persistence, patience and luck; similar to the iterative research you would undertake when IN your Ph.D. The diligence in following the processes will help you articulate your future research in your SOP and be appreciated by schools & faculty.
-??? Good to great applicants generally have a record of publishing their work (internal journals or industry, scientific or functional journals / publications), with the really strong ones having published and independently verifiable intellectual property (Patents, trademarks etc). Even better if you have a strong & consistent record e.g 2 publications a year over a 3-4 year period. Writing a blog doesn?t count J.
-??? Your recommenders will be able to comment not only on your superior academic ability, but also your ability to plan and conduct empirical, minimally supervised research. Your recommenders should talk about your communication skill, analytical ability and intellectual curiosity, with specific examples. They should ideally be Ph.D?s themselves, as they would understand the challenges of achieving the qualification.
Without exception, every Ph.D that I?ve met planned, strategized and executed the move over minimum 2 years.
IF you?re interested in this field, but are NOT in a research and analysis heavy job / career, there?re alternative ways to get there:
-??? Interim education / career, through a research associate role or an interim Master?s degree with a heavy research element. Nearly all areas of Ph.D level academics and research are highly quantitative in nature (including HR, marketing and strategy); an interim Masters (e.g M.Phil in the UK or MS in the US) would offer a good place to acquire research skills, and develop your proposal.
-??? IF you don?t have a record of research and publication, you will certainly need to start with an interim Masters Degree, perhaps undertake 2-4 years of professional research; then apply for a Ph.D, deciding fairly early on what broad topic area you want to research, then diligently research and publish around that topic.
-??? Some business schools offer a Research Associate Program as a stepping stone to a Ph.D. Check these examples from ISB, IMD and INSEAD. Excellent starting points to acquire the skills and build your own research agenda, preparing yourself for a Ph.D.
Career dynamics, School choices and costs
Unlike the job market for MBA?s which ebbs and flows with economies and policy, Ph.Ds from the Top schools will see a stable & growing job market. Academics are some of the hardest talent to find, particularly for several newer, but credibly good MBA/MS programs around the globe. But Ph.Ds still have to convince prospective employers that they have the ability to bring previously not-conducted research, and effectively teach students at all levels. The job is not guaranteed, but the market is wide enough for those flexible enough to relocate.
Being the highest & most intellectually challenging qualification ? Ph.Ds are normally exempt from immigration restrictions or work-permit quotas.
Further ? every Ph.D program in the US Top 30, EU Top 10 and the Asian Top 10 (including the IIM Fellow programs), is more competitive to enter than a Top 10 MBA Program (e.g Stanford, Harvard); Wharton?s Ph.D entering class in 2011 was selected at a ratio of 3%. The quality of your academic peers is therefore likely to be excellent with no exception. Unlike MBAs which force schools to offer a broader generalist curriculum, Ph.D programs and their resources can be geared to the school?s or the university?s core strengths. As a result, a school (not always by its choice) would have to offer MBA courses in areas they?re traditionally weak in, and get poorly marked in rankings anyway. But this would likely NOT happen with a Ph.D program. Example ? Georgia Tech?s offers the world?s finest Operations, Decision Science and Supply Chain Ph.D program.. period! Graduates are known to teach in the best Engineering & Business schools around the globe. Georgia?s tech MBA program ????
If you want to do a good to great doctorate in management, the US Top 30, EU Top 10 (including LSE here), MIT?s Engineering Systems Division, Georgia Tech?s ISYE Program, Stanford?s Management Science & Engineering are pretty much the gold standard for Business Ph.D programs globally. Doctoral Graduates of these programs can feel confident of their employment prospects in business schools anywhere in the world. Starting salaries in US Schools (reference point) for Assistant Professors average $100k base + associated benefits.
These advantages are a good reason why there?s no rankings scramble for Ph.D programs.
Cost is a key advantage when in a Ph.D. Barring the EU/UK schools, which don?t have a blanket policy ? all the US Schools in the Top 25-30 will have GRA (graduate research assistant) programs that will not only waive tuition, but also pay the Ph.D a healthy stipend (varies between $25-35K /year) for their work. Consider this a salary for contributions to the school. Tuition waiver, benefits and the GRA work out to an investment (like a ?CTC) of ~$100K/year per Ph.D student for the school. You can understand why the Ph.Ds & their work is precious, and why schools can be picky about who they admit. Schools want to see their research published and publicized to attract revenue, talent and endowment. A poor applicant & a poor researcher won?t contribute to success.
If you have to go in for an interim Masters Degree, you will have to invest some of your own money for it. While US Schools are a little more generous with scholarship / GRA funding for pre-Ph.D Masters courses, it gets more difficult in the UK. You will have to pay pretty much full-fare in the UK as a non-EU student (?8-14K / year). In the EU, tuition fees for Ph.D / bridge Masters Programs are minimal largely because such academics are state or corporate ?sponsored. You may be able to still negotiate the right financial aid package with the program director. It also makes EU schools very choosy about the research they want to conduct, therefore the Ph.D students they want to take on.
Conclusion
If you have the passion and motivation to work hard for the next 10-12 years, a Ph.D and a future career in academia / research is fulfilling and rewarding. Success takes discipline, motivation and unflagging faith that your research will yield something intelligent, and usable.

How You Can Help Market Your Business Online | Your Internet's ...
Most mobile phone companies let you add a dedicated work number to your existing phone. So get that new number today.
Incorporate an automatic electronic signature into your emails as it portrays a more professional image. This is like an online business card. There?s no telling which of your email contacts might be in the market for some cat food from your cat food site.
If you have an online business you must work hard to promote it. Big business do not get that way through being lucky. Do you think Anheuser Busch just hit a stroke of luck when they developed their brands of beer? No, luck wasn?t a part of their success. Hard work and dedication are behind the success that companies like this have seen.
Create and advertise limited edition products and watch your profits grow. People enjoy owning exclusive products, and seeing words like this in your ads can convince people to buy something right away.
Incorporate the word ?fast? into your ad campaigns and language surrounding products and purchases. People often place more value on time than money; for this reason, emphasize speed and efficiency in your advertising copy.
You can also sell the product at a hugely discounted price by bundling it with a complementary product. You should always state your policies in clear, accessible language so as not to misrepresent yourself.
Think about using mobile marketing. Let visitors sign up for text alerts that will inform them of a big sale. It?s the newest tool on the scene for internet marketing.
Marketing is all about finding a need and filling that need. Start your business by knowing everyday, just what questions you are answering. If you are in the position to solve a problem for someone, you are also in the position to turn them into a customer.
Your ordering system must be 100% secure. You can open an account with Paypal or a similar service that allows you to include a safe transaction system on your website. Have people create password-protected accounts before they give you private and payment information.
Knowing your competition can be very beneficial to your own strategies as you learn from their successes and mistakes. If you could see yourself purchasing something from them, then you can guarantee that they are doing the right thing. Look for ways that you can use their ideas into your own unique strategy.
Learn how to employ HTML tags if you want the best optimization results. These tags are used to indicate key content on the page and makes it appear bold. A search engine crawler will rate your site based on which tags you use and emphasize. Therefore, put an emphasis on any important keywords you are using.
You can get lots of visitors to a website through viral videos. You will need to test your brain and think a little unconventionally if you want to make a video that can hold the attention of thousands or maybe millions of people. But if you can do it correctly, it will have far more impact on sales than any other type of campaign.
If you have your Internet marketing plan, start executing it! Do you think you can apply these tips to your company? Can you start adjusting your plan to make it better? If you feel sure of what you just learned, you can be on your way to progress.

MOSCOW (AP) ? Hollywood star Will Smith slapped a male television reporter who he said tried to kiss him on the lips as he walked down the red carpet for the Moscow premiere of "Men in Black III."
The reporter from the Ukrainian television channel 1+1, Vitalii Sediuk, made headlines at the Venice Film Festival in September when he presented a bouquet of clearly unappreciated purple hydrangeas to Madonna and called her "my princess."
Smith was even less charmed by the reporter, who approached him on the carpet outside the movie theater on Friday night and tried to kiss him.
"C'mon man, what the hell is your problem buddy?" Smith said as he pushed Serdiuk away and slapped him lightly across the cheek with the back of his left hand.
"He's lucky I didn't sucker punch him," Smith said to the crowd of journalists and fans. "Oh, I said that on camera. It's all good."
He said Serdiuk kissed him on the mouth, but it was not clear whether the reporter intended to do so or was aiming for his cheek as Smith swiveled to avoid him.
Madonna rebuffed Sediuk rather ungraciously in Venice, saying: "I absolutely loathe hydrangeas." She stashed the flowers under a table before beginning a press conference.
She later made a short silent video called "Madonna's love letter to hydrangeas." The video begins with a sarcastic apology and concludes with subtitles reading "I'm left with the feeling that I still hate hydrangeas."

Mike Huckabee And Citizens United Were Totally Just Kidding About That 'Political Whores' Mailer
Hello fellow MizFit readers!
Thanks for letting me take over the MizFitturf today.
My name is Talia and I blog at Bite Size Wellness?the homeland to healthy living in a cinch. I wanted to chat about an ignored topic: your food relationship.
If you were going to post a status update stating what your relationship with food is, what would you say?
Going through a divorce? On great terms? Single and looking to mingle (in the vegetable aisle, of course!)?
Maybe you are thinking that I?m crazy and having a relationship with food is, um, weird.
Food isn?t even alive, how can we have a relationship with it? Well, most of us actually have a pretty serious relationship with our food?and it?s an intimate one at that.
If you think about it, the time spent with your food is much more than just cooking and eating.
We talk about it, think about it, turn to it in good times and bad, in social situations, we use it as gifts, write about it (amen to fellow foodie bloggers!), turn to it when we are bored, when we want a reward, for comfort, for health.
Plus, the billion-dollar food industry is sure to have food be at our top of mind just in case you weren?t already wrapped up in it enough!? The list goes on and on.
This intimate and timeless relationship with the plethora of eats out there has caused us to forget that at the root of it all, food is fuel.
Short story for such a relationship saga, don?t you think?
Food shouldn?t fill a hole of sadness or be your go-to in times of celebration.
The goal of food is to stimulate and energize you. While we may not have the time or the resources to always eat a homemade, fresh and balanced meal, there are still ways to reconnect with the once-and-forever love of your life so you can proudly post that food is not thy enemy.
Here are 7 ways to correct your tangled mess of a foodie relationship and get on to living an uncomplicated life with your eats:
- Listen to your Body: Really get in touch with your feelings of hunger and fullness. This is always a work in progress for me because I have become a creature of habit. Noon means lunch whether my belly is grumbling or not. While the taste bud delights often interfere with these feelings, make note of when you feel truly satisfied and when food zaps the energy right out of you.
- Learn more about Food: A healthy relationship with food stems from more than calories and fat. When I first started on my weight loss/healthy living venture I only cared about Points (aka WW ruled my world). However, over time I discovered that other nutrients really impact the way I feel beyond counting calories. Make friends with fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals that will help you assess what your body needs.
- Bring out the Journal: In order to make new habits, you have to focus on becoming aware of your current relationship status. Writing things down is the best way to acknowledge the times when food fuels you or fails you.
- Slow it Down: I know that many of us have a sprint mentality, but leave that for the actual racetrack. Eating is one of those times when slowing down will help you stay happily full and not stuffed to the brim?a relationship saver that offers waistline relief. Score! Leaving some cookies on the plate because you recognize your full meter is a major accomplishment and proves that you and food are making stride together.
- Plan Ahead: If you have a meeting with food on a whim, you may be a little more loosey-goosy with your mingling. Planning ahead helps you balance your intake and avoid poor choices (better known as the planned break-up with food the next day). Don?t let the chaos of everyday life ruin your food relationship. A few minutes of thinking can help youstay on track even when life gets crazy.
- Stop Obsessing: There was a time during my Weight Watchers? life when I thought food and I were homies. Turns out, I got a little too involved in my food relationship that I became a flat out control freak. I remember when I had a minor heart attack because my mom put a dollop of olive oil in a pot of boiling pasta so the noodles wouldn?t stick together and I thought the world was over because I had to count that as Points for the day. Who wants to live like that? Although your relationship with food is ongoing and constant, you need to have a general understanding that food will be a part of your life but not rule your life.
- Stay Positive: I know that unlike other addictions or ?bad habits? where you can give them up cold turkey, food will always be a part of your day-to-day because you have to eat to live. Like any relationships that you just can?t shake, you will encounter a few bumps from time to time, but changing your mindset will morph your food relationship from one of constant turmoil to one of bliss. Remeber healthy eating is a journey not a one-and-done transport. Be patient and don?t give up! You and food will be on the same team in no time.
You don?t need to become a farmer that has conversations with apples and only eats organic to have a healthy food relationship.
Just thinking about food as nature?s fuel will get you on track to nourishing your mind and body in a new way that will have you screaming joyous phrases about micronutrients instead of running for the hills with a backpack of carrots.
Let?s remind ourselves of the simplest thing: food you are my fuel?.the rest of the ?junk? is just unwholesome chatter.
Question of the day: What?s your current relationship status with food?
?
Hope you?ll stop by Bite Size Wellness to chat in bite size portions with me all day long! Or please say hi on Facebook or Twitter.

The Most Exciting Moment of My Scientific Career
Thumbi Ndung?u left Kenya 1995 to study medicine at Harvard. He later returned to Africa on a mission to exploit HIV?s vulnerabilities. Now the head of the HIV Pathogenesis Program at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, Ndung?u spoke with Scientific American contributor Brendan Borrell about a research breakthrough early in his career that helped set the pace for the Kenyan?s ongoing study of genes in the immune system that may help to fight AIDS and lead to a vaccine. When asked which moment has been the most exciting of his young career, Ndung?u responded:
?The most exciting moment for me was when I succeeded in developing the first molecular clone of HIV subtype C as a graduate student at Harvard in the late 1990s. HIV subtype C is the most common subtype in the world. About 50 percent of all infections are caused by subtype C, but developing an infectious clone was difficult for reasons that we don?t fully understand.
?An infectious clone is when you take a virus and put it in a bacterial plasmid [a circular strand of DNA] so that you can grow it over and over again. The example that I like to use is that it?s almost like a cassette recording of the entire genetic information of the virus. Every time you need to use the virus in a well-controlled experiment in the laboratory, you can then get that infectious molecular clone and put it in a cell to make copies of it.
?I?d been trying for three years to make a clone, and was getting very frustrated. There were many other groups around the world that had also been trying and had not been successful. Once we had what we thought was a clone, we ran a series of experiments to make sure we had the full length of the HIV inserted. Then we put it into cells and waited for several days before testing whether we were getting active virus production. We were.
?It?s hard to say what we did that was different from other groups, but I probably just kept trying until something worked. It also took a bit of luck.?

UnEasyshare: Kodak's now-defunct, Rochester-based nuclear reactor
Ready for this unsettling Kodak moment? It seems the one-time imaging powerhouse held a decades-long secret deep in a bunker below Building 82 on its Rochester campus. The now vacant facility, a concrete-shielded chamber built in 1974, was once home to a californium neutron flux multiplier (CFX) or, in layman's terms, a small nuclear reactor as recently as six years ago. Certainly, that's not the technology one would normally associate with an outfit built on the foundations of photography, but according to recently released documents, its three and a half pound store of enriched uranium was used primarily for neutron radiography -- an imaging technique -- and chemical purity testing. The site's long been shut down and the radioactive material in question carted off with federal oversight, but for denizens of that upstate New York territory, alarming news of the reactor's existence has only just surfaced. Before you cast Kodak the evil side eye, bear in mind post-9/11 policies forbade the company from making the whereabouts of its small reactor widely known, though earlier scientific studies did make reference to the CFX's existence. It's an eye-opening glimpse into the esoteric machinations of private industry and the deadly dangers that lurk below your feet.
